Glow Plug Light Flashing – What Does the Coil Symbol Mean?
On a diesel car the glow plug light usually comes on before starting to show that the combustion chamber is being preheated. If the coil symbol flashes while driving, on many models it signals an engine management fault – not necessarily a problem with the glow plugs themselves. The range of possible causes depends on the make and model.
If the coil light flashes but the engine runs normally, you can usually drive carefully to a workshop; if you notice loss of power, heavy smoke or rough running, stop the car safely.

What does the coil symbol on the dashboard mean?
The glow plug light is usually yellow or amber and shaped like a horizontal coil. On diesel engines it mainly shows that the cold-start assist system is working.
After you switch on the ignition, the coil may stay lit for a short time. On many cars it's recommended to start the engine once it goes out, although the starting procedure depends on the design and should follow the owner's manual.
Glow plugs can also keep working after the engine has started, helping it run smoothly and reducing emissions. That doesn't mean the light has to be on during this time.
On some cars a flashing coil is a general engine management warning. So don't order a full set of glow plugs before diagnostics.
Glow plug light on vs flashing – the difference
- Coil on before starting: usually normal preheating.
- Coil goes out after a moment: usually the preheat stage is complete.
- Coil flashing while driving: possible engine management fault.
- Coil stays on after starting: meaning depends on the model – needs checking.
- Coil and check engine light together: control unit diagnostics recommended.
What the light means depends on when it appears. A brief glow before starting the engine is usually normal, while flashing while driving needs checking.
On some models the light may flash for problems with the fuel system, sensors, engine management or even the brake light circuit. This isn't a universal list for every make.
Most common causes of a flashing coil light
| Cause | Other symptoms | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| Faulty glow plug | Harder cold starts | High – diagnostics |
| Glow plug control unit or relay | Preheating problems | High |
| Brake pedal switch | Brake lights not working properly on some models | Check urgently |
| Boost system problem | Loss of power, limp mode | High |
| Fuel system fault | Jerking, rough running | High |
| EGR or emissions system problem | Engine fault codes, power may be limited | High |
Not every fault linked to a flashing coil involves the preheating system. The exact cause should be established from fault codes, live data and other symptoms.
What to do when the glow plug light flashes
- 1Check whether the coil flashes while driving or only lights up before starting.
- 2Look out for loss of power, smoke, rough running and other warning lights.
- 3If the engine runs abnormally or a red warning appears, stop the car safely.
- 4If the car runs normally, go easy on the engine and plan diagnostics.
- 5Book computer diagnostics and tell us the conditions in which the fault appeared.
With a flashing coil, watch how the car behaves, but don't try hard acceleration to test the power.
If the light came on together with a brake light problem, checking the brake lights also matters for safety.
How we diagnose a flashing glow plug light at Pulsecar
Computer diagnostics costs 100 zł. We read the available fault codes and analyse the engine's live data, which can point to a fault in the preheating system or another component.
Depending on the result, further glow plug measurements or checks of the control unit, wiring or engine management components may be needed. Don't replace all the plugs just because the light is flashing.
If diagnostics point to a boost problem, further checks may involve the turbocharger. If the cause is carbon build-up or an intake system fault, the scope of work is set individually.
How much does a repair cost when the coil light flashes?
Computer diagnostics at Pulsecar costs 100 zł. Replacing glow plugs or their control unit, or repairing the wiring, is quoted after diagnostics.
If a turbocharger fault requiring replacement is confirmed, labour costs from 600 zł. This is neither a typical nor an automatic consequence of a flashing coil, though.
We present a cost estimate for your approval before starting work. Labour comes with a 6-month warranty. You can pick a time via online booking, and more about engine faults can be found on the check engine light page.
