DPF Light On – Is Your Diesel Particulate Filter Blocked?

The DPF light usually means the diesel particulate filter needs to regenerate or the system has detected a problem with how it works. It doesn't always mean the filter is permanently blocked and needs replacing. What to do next depends on the car's message, any other warning lights and how the engine is running.

With just the yellow DPF light on and the engine running normally, you can usually follow the manufacturer's regeneration instructions – but with loss of power, a red warning or overheating, stop driving.

What does the DPF light on the dashboard mean?

The DPF (diesel particulate filter) traps much of the soot produced when diesel fuel burns. Under the right conditions the system runs a regeneration, during which the accumulated soot is burned off.

The DPF light is usually yellow or amber and shows a filter symbol with dots. Its look varies between manufacturers. Some cars display an exhaust filter message instead of a separate symbol.

A steady light may mean a regeneration is needed as described in the owner's manual. On some models a flashing light or additional warnings point to a more advanced problem that needs diagnostics.

Don't confuse the DPF with the cabin filter or the engine air filter. The DPF is part of the exhaust system and operates at high temperatures.

DPF light on or flashing – can you drive?

  • Yellow DPF light with no other symptoms: check the regeneration instructions.
  • DPF light flashing: meaning depends on the model; diagnostics recommended.
  • DPF and check engine light together: possible emissions system fault.
  • Loss of power or limp mode: don't try hard driving to burn it off.
  • Red warning or overheating: stop the car.

If only the yellow DPF light is on, the engine runs normally and the owner's manual allows regeneration while driving, you can follow the procedure the manufacturer describes. There's no single speed or driving time that suits every car, though.

If the car goes into limp mode, loses power or reports other faults, trying to force a regeneration by driving hard may be the wrong move. In that case diagnostics are needed.

With a red temperature warning, serious engine running problems or unusual smoke, stop the car safely. DPF regeneration raises exhaust temperatures, so also follow the parking and safety recommendations.

Most common causes of a blocked DPF

CauseOther symptomsUrgency
Frequent short journeysInterrupted regenerations, filter filling upModerate to high
Faulty differential pressure sensorControl unit faults, implausible readingsHigh – diagnostics
Exhaust gas temperature sensor problemRegeneration can't run properlyHigh
Injection system faultSmoke, rough running, more sootHigh
EGR or intake malfunctionLoss of power, emissions faultsHigh
Ash build-upHigh flow resistance despite regenerationHigh – assess filter condition
Wrong engine oilFaster deposit build-upHigh – verify

Soot build-up can result from driving conditions, but also from the engine not running properly. That's why simply burning off the filter doesn't always solve the problem.

What to do when the DPF light comes on

  1. 1Look up the exact message and symbol in the owner's manual.
  2. 2Check whether other warning lights are on and whether the engine runs normally.
  3. 3If the manufacturer recommends regeneration while driving and nothing speaks against it, follow that procedure.
  4. 4If the warning doesn't go out, limp mode kicks in or other faults appear, don't repeat the hard driving.
  5. 5Book computer diagnostics and describe the conditions in which the light appeared.

First, establish whether the car is signalling a standard regeneration or a fault. Don't assume a longer drive will always solve the problem.

Regeneration mainly removes soot, not the ash that accumulates in the filter. That's why a high-mileage filter may need further assessment even if regenerations are completed properly.

How we diagnose DPF problems at Pulsecar

Computer diagnostics costs 100 zł. We check the available fault codes and filter-related data, where the car's control unit provides them.

Depending on the design, we can analyse the differential pressure, exhaust gas temperatures, regeneration history and engine live data. The data must be interpreted under the right conditions, as a single reading doesn't always reflect the filter's real condition.

If excessive soot is caused by an intake or boost problem, the turbocharger or the intake system may need checking. We set the scope of further work after diagnostics.

How much do DPF diagnostics and repair cost?

Computer diagnostics at Pulsecar costs 100 zł. The cost of further filter service, sensor repairs or tackling the cause of excessive smoke is set after diagnostics.

If the problem is caused by the wrong engine oil, an oil and filter change costs from 120 zł labour. The oil must meet the manufacturer's requirements, including the correct specification for an engine with a DPF.

If a turbocharger failure requiring replacement is confirmed, labour costs from 600 zł. This is not a standard fix for every DPF fault.

Before starting work we present a cost estimate for your approval. Labour comes with a 6-month warranty. You can pick a time via online booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with the DPF light on?

If only the yellow light is on, the engine runs normally and the manual allows regeneration while driving, you can follow the recommended procedure. With other faults, diagnostics are needed.

Does the DPF light always mean a blocked filter?

No. It may indicate that a regeneration is needed or a fault in a sensor or another part of the system.

How long do I need to drive to clear the DPF?

There's no universal time or speed. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific car.

Does a blocked DPF cause loss of power?

Yes – on some cars the control unit limits power when there are filter or emissions system problems. The same symptom can have other causes too.
