Suspension knocking — where does it come from and is it dangerous?

Suspension knocks are one of the most common reasons for a workshop visit. They usually mean a worn rubber-metal bushing or play in a joint. The knocking itself is rarely dangerous straight away, but play in the steering or a control arm affects handling and tyre wear.

Most common variants and causes

Over potholes and speed bumps

Check within a few days
  • Anti-roll bar links
  • Control arm bushes or ball joints
  • Shock absorbers, strut mounts

The fault can get worse and more expensive. Drive carefully and book a diagnosis.

What you can check yourself

  1. Note when it knocks: over bumps, when turning, when braking.
  2. Check which side the sound comes from — front or rear, left or right.
  3. Notice whether the steering wheel shakes or the car pulls.
  4. Look at the tyres — uneven wear often goes with play in the suspension.

How we check it in the workshop

We put the car on a lift and check for play in the control arms, stabiliser links, tie rod ends, shock absorbers and mounts. After replacing suspension parts we do a wheel alignment.

This is guidance only, not a diagnosis. We’ll find the exact cause at our workshop in Bielany — you approve the quote before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

What usually knocks in the suspension?

Stabiliser links, control arm bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends, as well as worn shock absorbers or their mounts.

Do I need a wheel alignment after replacing suspension parts?

After replacing control arms, tie rod ends or shock absorbers — yes. Without it the tyres wear faster and the car may pull.
