Oil Warning Light – What Do the Red and Yellow Lights Mean?
A red oil warning light with the engine running most often means dangerously low oil pressure – you need to stop the car safely and switch off the engine straight away. On many cars, a yellow light indicates a low oil level or a problem measuring it. The meaning of the symbol depends on the manufacturer, so check the message and your owner's manual.
If the red oil pressure light is on while the engine is running, stop the car safely, switch off the engine and don't restart it until the cause has been found.

What does the red oil warning light mean?
The red oil light usually shows an oil can with a drop. If it comes on briefly when you switch on the ignition, before starting the engine, it's normally just a system test.
If the symbol stays lit after starting or appears while driving, it may mean the lubrication pressure is too low. The cause could be a lack of oil, a faulty pump, a problem in the lubrication system or a faulty sensor.
Insufficient pressure can damage the bearing shells, crankshaft, turbocharger and other parts. That's why you shouldn't keep driving just to reach a nearby workshop.
Yellow vs red oil warning light – the difference
- Red oil can with the engine running: stop the car and switch off the engine.
- Yellow oil can: check the message and the oil level as the manual describes.
- Light on before the engine starts: usually a normal test.
- Light flashing: meaning depends on the system design and the message.
- Light plus a metallic knocking from the engine: don't restart the engine.
On many cars the red symbol refers to oil pressure and the yellow one to oil level or the sensor. This isn't the rule for every make, though.
Some vehicles use additional text messages, warning chimes or a flashing symbol. The meaning of a specific warning should be confirmed in the owner's manual.
Most common causes of the oil warning light
| Cause | Other symptoms | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| Low oil level | Warning, sometimes visible leaks | Check urgently |
| Oil pressure too low | Red light with the engine running | Stop the engine immediately |
| Oil pump failure | Pressure drop, possible engine noise | Immediate |
| Oil filter or flow problem | Incorrect lubrication pressure | Immediate with a red warning |
| Pressure sensor or wiring | Warning despite possibly correct pressure | Verify urgently |
| Worn engine components | Knocking, pressure drops when warm | Immediate with a red warning |
The light doesn't automatically mean you just need to top up the oil. Even with the correct level, the lubrication pressure can be too low.
What to do when the red oil light comes on
- 1Pull over somewhere safe without any sudden manoeuvres.
- 2Switch off the engine as soon as you have stopped safely.
- 3Don't open hot components – wait as long as your owner's manual advises.
- 4Check the oil level using the method the manufacturer specifies, if it's safe to do so.
- 5Don't restart the engine while the red warning persists; arrange transport to the workshop and engine diagnostics.
The priority is to reduce the risk of the engine seizing. Running the engine without adequate lubrication can cause serious damage in a short time.
A correct oil level on the dipstick doesn't confirm correct pressure. With a red warning, the cause must be found before the engine is started again.
How we diagnose oil pressure problems
Computer diagnostics at Pulsecar costs 100 zł. Reading the fault codes can help identify sensor problems, but it's no substitute for measuring the actual oil pressure when that's needed.
Depending on the symptoms, the oil level and condition, the filter, the sensor and the lubrication system components should be checked. We agree the scope of the inspection before starting work.
If internal damage is suspected, an engine borescope inspection for 300 zł can help. It lets us see selected accessible surfaces, but it doesn't replace all mechanical measurements.
How much does a repair cost after the oil light comes on?
The price depends on the cause. An oil and oil filter change costs from 120 zł labour, but it won't fix every lubrication pressure fault.
Computer diagnostics costs 100 zł and an engine borescope inspection 300 zł. Repairing the oil pump, the sensor or damaged engine parts is quoted individually after diagnostics.
Before any work we present a cost estimate for your approval. Labour comes with a 6-month warranty. For a car showing a red warning, arrange safe transport to the workshop first; then you can schedule a visit via online booking.
