Mercedes OM651 Injectors: Symptoms, Diagnostics and Repair
On the Mercedes OM651 engine, injector problems can cause rough running, harder starting, smoke or a loss of power. Some engines suffered from faults in certain injection system designs, but this does not apply to every OM651. Before replacing injectors, the cause has to be confirmed, because other fuel system components can produce similar symptoms.
If your OM651 runs very rough, smokes heavily, knocks or shows signs of a fuel leak, stop the engine safely and find the cause before driving on.

Which Mercedes models have the OM651 engine?
The OM651 is a family of Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder diesel engines used, typically from the late 2000s, in a range of passenger cars and vans. You can find it in selected versions of the A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, E-Class, GLK and the Sprinter, among others.
Depending on the model year and variant, the engine may have different injection system designs. That is why injectors should not be chosen based only on the OM651 name or engine capacity.
Problems associated with early versions of the injection system do not mean that all later engines are equally prone to failure. What matters is the exact configuration, repair history and current condition of the engine.
OM651 – symptoms of faulty injectors
- Harder starting with a cold or warm engine.
- Rough idling.
- Jerking when accelerating.
- Excessive smoke from the exhaust.
- Loss of power and stored control unit fault codes.
- Unusual combustion noises or louder running.
- A smell of fuel or signs of leaks around the engine ancillaries.
An incorrect fuel quantity or a poor spray pattern can affect combustion. Symptoms are often more noticeable on a cold start, at idle or when accelerating.
However, similar problems can be caused by incorrect fuel pressure, sensor faults, intake leaks or the mechanical condition of the engine.
Why can OM651 injectors fail?
| Possible cause | Additional symptoms | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| Faulty injector operation | Uneven idle, smoke | High |
| Leaking injector | Smell of fuel, starting problems | High |
| Fuel pressure problem | Stalling, hard starting | High |
| Wiring or control fault | Electrical fault codes, rough running | High |
| Contaminated fuel system | Recurring fuel metering problems | High |
| Mechanical engine fault | Knocking, loss of compression | Urgent diagnostics |
Injectors work under high pressure and must meter fuel very precisely. How they work depends on fuel quality, system cleanliness, electronic control and the condition of other components.
Some OM651 versions had problems related to the design or control of the injection system. In other cases, the cause is normal wear, contaminated fuel, incorrect pressure or a wiring fault.
You should not assume that every rough-running OM651 needs a full set of new injectors. Diagnostics should also cover the intake system, fuel pressure and the mechanical condition of the engine.
What should you do if your Mercedes OM651 runs rough?
- 1Note whether the problem occurs with a cold engine, once warm or when accelerating.
- 2Check whether the engine warning light or a reduced power message has appeared.
- 3If there is heavy knocking, a fuel leak or heavy smoke, stop the car safely.
- 4Do not undo common rail lines while the engine is running.
- 5Book computer diagnostics and describe the symptoms.
- 6Once the cause is confirmed, approve the scope of the repair and the estimate.
Do not keep driving hard if the engine is jerking badly or smoking noticeably. Poor combustion can affect other parts of the engine and the exhaust aftertreatment system.
The common rail system operates at very high pressure. Opening fuel lines yourself can cause serious injury.
How we diagnose OM651 injectors at Pulsecar
Computer diagnostics costs 100 zł. We check the available fault codes and injection system parameters, where the vehicle's control unit provides them.
Depending on the symptoms, fuel pressure, injector corrections, wiring and leak-tightness may need to be assessed. Injector correction values alone are not always enough to pinpoint a faulty injector.
Where justified, additional tests are needed, and if internal engine damage is suspected, an engine borescope inspection for 300 zł can help. This test does not replace checking the injectors themselves.
If replacement proves necessary, the work may include the correct injectors, seals and the required fitting parts. Depending on the version, coding or adaptation procedures may also need to be carried out.
How much does an OM651 injector repair cost?
Computer diagnostics at Pulsecar costs 100 zł, and an engine borescope inspection, where justified, 300 zł. The cost of replacing or repairing injectors is set after diagnosis.
The price depends on how many parts need repair, the injection system version, access and the condition of the mountings. Injectors, seals and other parts are priced separately.
To reduce the risk of problems, use good-quality fuel, follow the manufacturer's filter recommendations and act on the first signs of poor combustion. Do not put off an inspection if the smoke persists.
Before work starts, we give you an estimate to approve. The work is covered by a 6-month warranty. You can book a visit using online booking, and information about other engine faults is on our engine repair page.
